Good Nutrition for Sun and Skin Protection
By Sue Noriega, RD

Over time, damage to skin from sun exposure not only increases wrinkling but the risk for skin cancer as well.  Applying sunscreen to the skin helps prevent sun damage. Did you know that nutrition helps protect skin, too?  Nourish your skin from the inside out by eating antioxidant-rich foods.  Foods that reduce inflammation and have disease fighting properties can also give the body some natural, internal sun protection.

A variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains plus fatty cold water fish are among foods that protect skin.  Avoid foods high in sugar, saturated fats and trans fats which tend to promote disease and speed up the aging process.

Drinking plenty of liquids is important to keep the body, including skin, hydrated.  Consume mostly water and unsweetened tea.  Fruits and vegetables are high in water content and contribute to fluid needs.  Soymilk, low fat milk, and yogurt contribute fluid as well as calcium, vitamin D, and protein.  Limit alcohol, caffeinated and sugary beverages.
